Marching Band Tip
Listen and Tune

Electronic tuners are a good way to get your horn in tune on one or two reference notes, but you can't stop there. Even on the finest professional horns, intonation will vary from note to note. The only way to play in tune consistently is to listen and adjust as you play. Developing this skill will improve your overall musicianship, whether you're playing a solo in a scholarship audition or performing with 300 others as a Marching Southerner!

Band Scholarship Audition Dates for the 2009-2010 Academic Year
Friday, February 6 & Saturday, February 7
Friday, March 6 & Saturday, March 7

If you are interested in auditioning for a band scholarship, please click on the link  below for an online application.  Please note:  This application is for a band scholarship, not Marching Southerners membership.  You will audition for your spot in the Marching Southerners during band camp.  Band camp is typically scheduled two weeks prior to the first day of classes for the fall semester.  You do not have to be a music major to receive a band scholarship.

Woodwind and Brass players should prepare a published solo or etude that best demonstrates your performance ability.  All students are asked to sight-read and perform selected major scales.  (Prepare all 12 major scales.  The committee will select several scales for you to perform during the audition).

Percussionists should prepare a published solo or etude on snare drum, timpani, and a percussion keyboard instrument as well as sight-read on each.  Note:  No piano accompaniment is required for woodwind, brass, or percussion solos.

The band scholarship may also serve as your audition for admission into the Department of Music.  Formal admission into the Department of Music is required if you plan to major in Music or Music Education.  Prospective music majors must also complete diagnostic placement exams in basic music theory and piano which may be accomplished on the audition day.  For further information on admission into the Department of Music and for information on audition pieces, repertoire and requirements, please visit the JSU music department website at www.music.jsu.edu and click on the scholarships link.

For questions about the band scholarship audition process, please contact Sandy Lynch at the University Bands Office (256) 782 5562.  GOOD LUCK!   We look forward to hearing you play.
